Prices and the amount of space on offer vary based on:

Where the server is located
What is the speed of the server providing the hosting
Is the server a dedicated (more expensive, but normally more stable) or a shared (performance shared with other users) server.
Bandwidth available for server.

Backups is the process of storing a copy of the website and its databases on an offsite location. In the case of an emergency (server problems, hacking, user finger trouble etc) the backup can then be restored to correct problems with the website.
