Genuine WordPress vs GPL Plugins

What is the difference between genuine WordPress Plugins vs GPL plugins?

The main difference between genuine WordPress plugins and GPL plugins lies in their source and distribution model:

Genuine WordPress Plugins:

    • Source: We buy the plugin directly from the original developers, typically through the official WordPress Plugin Repository, developer websites, or authorized marketplaces.
    • Support and Updates: The original developers provide regular updates which will automatically update, security patches, and official support as long as the annual or monthly licence fee is paid up.
    • Licensing: These can be GPL or have other licensing models but are generally trusted due to their official source.
    • Quality Assurance: The original developer manages rigorous testing and quality checks before release & fixes problems and vulnerabilities as they are reported.

GPL Plugins:

    • Source: Our GPL plugin supplier buys an unlimited licence from the original developers and then distributes that plugin under the GPL (General Public License), meaning the original plugin is provided 100% unmodified to us, as soon as the GPL provider has updated their copy of the file.
    • Support and Updates: GPL plugins lack official support from the original developer, BUT since FAQ provide the support for the GPL plugins we install, we will handle troubleshooting & finding the solution to fix problems and if required will licence one copy of the plugin & replicate your data to a Stage site for the official developer to investigate & fix problems.  We are notified of plugin updates on a daily basis for every plugin we use, and based on the severity of the problems fixed or improved, we do a manual update to client sites.
Licensing: Always under the GPL, which grants freedom to modify and redistribute the plugin.
Quality Assurance: The GPL provider FAQ has partnered with can vary widely. Plugins redistributed by third parties may not have the same level of testing and may introduce security risks or compatibility issues.

Risk of using GPL Plugins

Using GPL WordPress plugins involves risks such as potential security vulnerabilities, lack of timely updates, and no direct original developer support.

Using GPL (General Public License) WordPress plugins over genuine (often proprietary or premium) plugins can offer several business advantages:

Cost-Effectiveness

  • Lower Expenses: GPL plugins are often free or come with a lower cost compared to premium plugins, reducing the overall budget for your website.
  • No Licensing Fees: Since GPL plugins can be used, modified, and distributed without paying licensing fees, businesses can save significantly on costs.

Flexibility and Customization

  • Freedom to Modify: GPL plugins can be freely modified to meet specific business needs. This flexibility allows businesses to tailor the functionality to their exact requirements without being restricted by the original developer’s design.
  • Enhanced Control: Businesses have complete control over the software, ensuring it can be customized and adapted as the business evolves.

Community Support and Innovation

  • Vast Community: GPL plugins benefit from a large community of developers and users who contribute to their improvement, security, and functionality.
  • Continuous Improvement: The open-source nature of GPL plugins fosters innovation, as developers can build on each other’s work, leading to rapid enhancements and new features.

No Vendor Lock-In

Independence: Using GPL plugins reduces dependency on a single vendor or developer, minimizing risks associated with vendor lock-in. Businesses can continue to use and update the plugin regardless of the original developer’s status.
Portability: Since GPL plugins are not tied to a specific vendor, they can be easily transferred between different hosting providers or development teams.

Security and Transparency

  • Open Source Code: The transparency of GPL plugins allows for thorough inspection by the community, leading to quicker identification and resolution of security vulnerabilities.
  • Active Patching: With many eyes on the code, security patches and updates are often released swiftly, enhancing the overall security of the website.

Legal and Ethical Considerations

  • Compliance with GPL License: Using GPL plugins ensures compliance with the open-source license, promoting ethical software use and distribution.
  • Contribution to Open Source: Businesses using and contributing to GPL plugins support the broader open-source community, fostering a culture of collaboration and shared knowledge.

Integration and Compatibility

  • Wide Compatibility: GPL plugins are typically designed to be compatible with a broad range of themes and other plugins, reducing potential conflicts and enhancing the overall user experience.
  • Easy Integration: With a large selection of GPL plugins available, businesses can easily find solutions that integrate seamlessly with their existing WordPress setup.

By leveraging the benefits of GPL WordPress plugins, businesses can achieve cost savings, flexibility, enhanced security, and active community support, all of which contribute to a more efficient and sustainable web presence.

Your Choice!

When suggesting a plugin to use on your website, FAQ will always give you a comparative quote including the cost of buying the genuine WordPress Plugins and remind you that licence fees are either on monthly or annual renewal.

Setup costs in most cases, excluding the few times when a major update has taken place, should be fairly similar.
